Preparing for Your Illinois Driving Permit Test

Where the Rubber Meets the Road

Are you ready to get behind the wheel on the Illinois roadways? You can prepare yourself for this new experience by becoming thoroughly familiarized with the driving requirements, rules, and regulations of the State of Illinois.

Driving is an enormous privilege that most of us can enjoy, as long as we follow the guidelines that keep us safe by preventing accidents. In the midst of learning all the rules, don’t forget that these rules are the reason we have the liberty to travel freely in our nation.

Ages of Permitted Drivers

In the State of Illinois, you can obtain a learner’s driving permit as young as 15, providing you have proof of completing a driver education class. Without completing a driver education class, applicants must be at least 17 yr. 3 mo. in order to take the permit test.

A learner’s permit will allow you to drive with a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult who is at least 21 years old, and has had a valid driver’s license for at least one year.

Required Documents

In order to take the test at the DMV, they are going to ask you for a few things including valid identification, proof of Illinois residency, and the permit fee ($20).

Be sure to take all of these documents with you to the DMV if you’re wanting to leave with a driving permit!

Looking Forward to the Challenge

Don’t worry, the Illinois driving permit test is a challenge that you can master; as long as you come prepared. Requirements include passing a simple vision exam and a written exam.

Although you will be studying a substantial number of driving facts and road rules, the written exam will only consist of around 35 questions. These will include topics such as recognition of road signs, decisions in potential driving scenarios, and the knowledge of penalties for traffic violations.
