It is recommended that you take a practice test before you take the actual written test. There are seven free practice tests for each state. First two tests cover roads signs and the other tests cover road and traffic rules.

If you have completed a defensive driving course, you may be able to save on your auto insurance premiums when buying a new or used car either by financing, leasing or through a bank car loan.

Regulatory traffic signs instruct drivers what they should, or should not do, in certain circumstances. You will be asked to identify roadway signs on the PA Driving Test.

The Pennsylvania DOT Driver's Exam

The final and most crucial step towards obtaining your license in the state of Pennsylvania is the DOT Driver’s Exam. Here you will need to demonstrate in practice everything you’ve learned about driving up to this point. You will operate a vehicle with an examiner beside you both on the road and in a closed driving space. Should you pass the exam, you’ll be given the necessary permit to apply for your permanent driver’s license and finally be free to drive the road as you please.

To begin, you’ll need to schedule a date and time for the exam to take place. This can easily be done online at the DOT’s website or with a certified private exam business. If you are under the age of 18, you’ll need to have driven at least 65 hours with your learner’s permit in order to qualify for the exam. Once the date is set, you’ll need to meet your examiner at the designated exam location with your own fully functional and street legal vehicle. The examiner will sit beside you while you’re at the wheel and direct you as the exam proceeds. You’ll be tested on all basic maneuvers such as stopping, backing up, parallel parking, and other essential facets of operating a vehicle properly. You’ll also be directed onto the open road to demonstrate your abilities in real everyday driving. Remember to check your mirrors, stop when necessary, obey all speed limits and other road signs, and obey all traffic laws. As long as you can show the examiner that you can safely drive while obeying all the necessary rules, you’ll pass the exam and be fully approved to obtain your permanent license.
