What to Expect On the Pennsylvania Driver's Permit Test

Applying for a Pennsylvania Driver’s Permit is an exciting event – but before you can take to the open road, you must first successfully pass the PA driver knowledge test. Although preparing for any exam can feel like a high-stakes experience, don’t stress. The permit test is designed to prepare you for driving, not to hold you back.

Skills Assessed on the PA Driver’s Permit Test

As outlined in the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual, the permit test is given either as a written exam or in audio format. If English is not your first language, you can opt to take the test in any of 18 different languages, so relax; it’s your knowledge that is being tested, not your grammar. You must correctly answer at least 15 of the test’s 18 questions in order to obtain your permit. All questions are multiple choice. If you are unable to pass, you must wait until the following day before you can take the test again.

There are three main categories that test questions will fall under: road signs, laws and regulations for Pennsylvania drivers, and basic safe-driving principles. Fortunately, the driver’s manual has a comprehensive outline of each of those areas. Chapter topics include Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit Information (you can find more on that on the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation website); Signals, Signs and Pavement Markings; Learning to Drive; Driving Record Information; Laws and Related Issues; and more.

How to Prepare for the Permit Test

Because the Pennsylvania driver’s permit test is based on the handbook, you need to start by thoroughly reading that resource. The information outlined in the handbook can be intimidating, but remember that you aren’t tackling this challenge alone! There are resources to help you build your knowledge just like you build your skills in driving: one task at a time. Once you feel you have a solid understanding of the manual, take some practice tests to help you assess your skills. A good practice test will, like the tests Driver Knowledge offers, be uniquely designed to address your state’s specific guidelines. A good test will also be hard; remember, your goal is to pass the state exam, and practice tests are developed to help you learn from mistakes. Keep track of your progress and review the areas where you experienced the most difficulty, and you’ll soon know you’re ready for the real exam.
