MCV Road Tests In The State Of New Jersey

The final step in obtaining your permanent driver’s license is the road test. This is when you’ll need to fully demonstrate your ability to drive safely and responsibly. In the state of New Jersey, these tests are overseen by the Motor Vehicle Commission at one of their driver testing centers. You’ll need to provide your own fully legal vehicle for the exam, as well as valid identification and your examination permit. Once you’ve passed the test, your examiner will give you an authorization slip to obtain your license from an MVC office.

As mentioned, the road test is meant to test your abilities as a safe and responsible driver. Your examiner will be present beside you in the vehicle to instruct you while the test lasts. Basic driving procedures like stopping at appropriate signs, making proper turns, and handling the vehicle correctly will be monitored. You’ll also be asked to demonstrate your ability in stopping smoothly, driving in reverse, parallel parking, and turning around appropriately. The test will take approximately 10-15 minutes. If failed, you must wait at least two weeks before taking it again. Multiple fails may require you to wait six months.

As with any test, practice is the always the best preparation. Driving with your permit should have given you plenty of experience already, but be sure to try everything you can. Be sure to practice parallel parking, stopping, and reversing well enough on your own before the test comes. Once you’re confident in your own abilities, you’ll be as prepared as ever to pass your first try.
