Road Skills Test: Virginia's DMV Driving Test

The last crucial step towards obtaining your driver’s license in the state of Virginia is the driving test. Known as the Virginia DMV Road Skills test, this test will determine whether or not you can safely operate a motor vehicle on the open road. These tests can be applied at almost every DMV location in the state. If passed, you will finally be able to apply for a permanent driver’s license. If not, the state requires you to wait two full days before retaking it. As with all tests, a thorough understanding of the material and practice are the best ways to ensure your success.

For the Road Skills test, you’ll be required to provide your own vehicle. This vehicle must be fully legal and operational, meaning all your mirrors, lights, and other essential functions must be fully intact. The examiner will sit beside you in the passenger seat for the duration of the test to monitor and give instructions. You’ll be asked to demonstrate your skills in basic driving maneuvers, parking maneuvers, following road signs and directions, as well as obeying all traffic laws. Practicing on the road with a licensed adult beforehand is the best way to practice for this test, as it will be much easier to operate a vehicle once you have experience. As long as you can accurately follow through with the examiner’s instructions throughout the exam, you will be approved to file for your permanent license once it’s over.
