You’ve decided you want to drive – you can be a teenager who is at least 16 years old, a middle-aged adult or a senior citizen. The first thing that you should do is read the New York State Driver’s Manual. Take your time and read each question carefully. In order to pass, you need to get 14 of the 20 questions right.

If you pass the test on the first try – you can always take it again – it will take about two weeks to come in the mail and will be good for five years. After that, you can take a road test after taking a pre-licensing test and have had supervised driver training. Once you pass the road test, you will get an interim license and then your real one in the mail. Now you will be able to call yourself a New York driver.
