It is recommended that you take a practice test before you take the actual written test. There are seven free practice tests for each state. First two tests cover roads signs and the other tests cover road and traffic rules.

If you have completed a defensive driving course, you may be able to save on your auto insurance premiums when buying a new or used car either by financing, leasing or through bank car loan.

Regulatory signs control traffic; they set limits or give commands and are enforceable by law. Warning Signs give you advance notice of possible hazards. Drive with caution. You will be asked to identify roadway signs on the NY Permit Test.

Taking the Permit Test NY

You’ve decided you want to drive – you can be a teenager who is at least 16 years old, a middle-aged adult or a senior citizen. Unless you want to drive a motorcycle, a large truck or bus, you will be going for a Class D license. The others require you to pass a different exam. If you’re in New York, you need to take the permit test NY before you can start taking lessons.

The first thing that you should do is read the New York State Driver’s Manual. It will tell you all the necessary rules of the road, including who has the right-of-way in certain situations, proper parking techniques, and how to properly pass a fellow driver on the road, among other things. Study it thoroughly. You can either get a physical copy or study it online – the online version has practice questions.

Secondly, you need to make sure you have all the proper documents for taking the permit test at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They have pretty stringent requirements about what qualifies as proper documentation – that includes a passport (domestic or foreign), naturalization certificates and a birth certificate. Without this, you will be denied from taking the test.  You will also pay a fee, which depends on your age.

Once you’re able to take the test, you’ll see that it’s a multiple choice test. Even if you’re not a native English speaker, you can likely take the test since it is offered in 14 different languages ranging from Japanese to Arabic. Take your time and read each question carefully. In order to pass, you need to get 14 of the 20 questions right.

If you pass the test on the first try – you can always take it again – it will take about two weeks to come in the mail and will be good for five years. After that, you can take a road test after taking a pre-licensing test and have had supervised driver training. Once you pass the road test, you will get an interim license and then your real one in the mail. Now you will be able to call yourself a New York driver.
