Essential Information for Passing the New York Permit Test

Turning 16 and getting your permit to drive is your first step towards adulthood. Driving provides you with an independence that you haven’t had yet. The New York DMV allows 16-year-olds to apply for a permit to learn how to drive before qualifying for an unrestricted driver’s license.

Before you can get your permit to learn to drive with a parent or guardian, you must provide paperwork, pass a vision test and pass a written test. The written permit test covers the basic rules of driving, road signs and laws specific to New York motor vehicles.

Questions

The questions for the permit test come directly from the New York Driver’s Manual and cover anything from speed limits in a school zone to laws and ramifications for drunk driving.

When you arrive to take your test, you’ll be happy to find that the test is multiple choice. However, along with the correct answer, there are similar answers, so you need to know the information to pass the test.

Score Needed to Pass the Permit Test

As within any test, you’re probably wondering how many questions you need to answer correctly to pass. The test features 20 questions, and you must answer 14 questions.

However, four of the questions pertain information on road signs. You must get at least two of these questions right as part of the total 14 correctly answered questions. So it’s possible to answer 14 questions correctly and still fail.

The Easy Way to Pass the Test

After downloading the driver’s manual, take some time to read it and go back to any sections you might feel like you didn’t understand or don’t remember. Then visit the Driver Knowledge website to take a couple of the practice tests for the New York permit test. The website offers practice tests in both English and Spanish.

Taking a practice test helps build confidence and ace the test. You can go back and study the sections in the manual of any questions that you missed on the practice test.

Safe driving!
