Work Out the Kinks with a Michigan Driving Test Questions

When you’re ready to take that final step in receiving your learner’s permit from the state of Michigan, preparation is key. You will be tested on your knowledge and experience, and as the old saying goes, “practice makes perfect.” To help you pass with flying colors, we’re here to explain everything you need to know about the permit test and why taking our practice Michigan driving test questions can get you behind the wheel in no-time.

Michigan Learner’s Permit Basics

In Michigan, residents under the age of 18 and new-to-the-state residents must take a knowledge exam before receiving their learner’s permit. For new residents over the age of 18, a 40-question operator test is given. For Michigan teenagers aged 14-17, the rules are a little different. Michigan teenagers must participate in the GDL program before taking the test to receive your permit.

GDL and Driver’s Ed

To help reduce the risk of age-related accidents, Michigan began implementing the Graduated Driver Licensing program, or GDL. This program requires teens between 14 years and 9 months and 17 years of age to reach certain milestones before receiving their license. The first step of the GDL program is the Level 1 Michigan learner’s permit.

In order to receive your Level 1 permit as part of the GDL program, teens must participate in an approved Driver’s Ed course. This course includes 24 hours of instruction, 4 hours of observation, 6 hours of driving instruction, and the Segment 1 written test.

The written test comes at the end of the Driver’s Ed course and doubles as the state’s permit test. When you have passed the Segment 1 test, your certificate of completion can be used to receive your learner’s permit from the state.

The Permit Test

Whether you’re taking the original operator test as a new Michigan resident or the Segment 1 test as Michigan teen, you’ll be tested on a variety of important information. The test can include (but is not limited to) questions that are included in the Michigan Driver’s Handbook, like basic driving techniques, defensive driving, basic road rules, traffic laws, road signage/markings, and more.
