The first step in acquiring your PA drivers license is reviewing the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual carefully. Next, you must have a certified registered nurse practitioner, physician, physician assistant or chiropractor conduct a physical examination to confirm you are healthy enough to operate a motor vehicle.

After passing your vision test and knowledge test and providing proof of residency, you are ready to schedule your road test. If you are under the age of 18, you must also complete 65 hours of adult-supervised driving with at least 10 hours of nighttime driving, five hours of inclement weather driving and a six-month waiting period after obtaining your PA learner’s permit.

During your PA drivers license test, your examiner must determine if you are a safe driver. He or she will pay very close attention to how you approach and obey stop lights, traffic signs and intersections. They will also make sure you drive with correct posture and have adequate control over your vehicle. Besides safe driving skills, you must also prove you know how to parallel park. You may not use park assist if your vehicle is equipped with that feature.
