If you have completed a defensive driving course, you may be able to save on your auto insurance premiums when buying a new or used car either by financing, leasing or through a bank car loan.

Regulatory traffic signs instruct drivers what they should, or should not do, in certain circumstances. You will be asked to identify roadway signs on the New Jersey Permit Test.

Prepare for Your DMV NJ Driving Test

As of 2016, there were over 6.2 million licensed drivers in the state of New Jersey. To join their ranks, you must first pass the New Jersey driving test. Keep reading to find out all that entails and what you need to bring to make your experience at the Motor Vehicle Commission as seamless as possible.

6-POINT IDENTIFICATION

To take the New Jersey driving test, you must prove your identity as required by the 6-point identification system. These requirements include at least one primary document, at least one secondary document, a verifiable Social Security number and proof of address. All documents must be original or certified copies, and you can see all the requirements here.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

To take your road test, you must schedule an appointment online or at a driver testing center. An examiner will accompany you on a public road course or in an off-road testing area. The test should not take longer than 10 to 15 minutes. You are allowed to use parking sensors and backup cameras that you may have installed in your vehicle to assist you during this test. Skills you can expect to be tested on include:

  • Driving in reverse
  • Smoothly stopping at appropriate signs
  • Sitting properly
  • Turning around
  • Yielding to right-of-way
  • Parallel parking
  • Proper steering

If you fail the road test, you must wait a minimum of two weeks before attempting the test again. If you fail three times, you may be required to wait six months before trying again. However, with diligent practice and a roadworthy vehicle, you should have no trouble passing the road test on your first try.
