Regulatory traffic signs instruct drivers what they should, or should not do, in certain circumstances. You will be asked to identify roadway signs on the Virginia DMV Practice Test.

Road Sign Knowledge: Practice For Virginia's DMV Knowledge Exam

The first part of Virginia’s knowledge exam is entirely dedicated to road signs. During this exam, you will need to visually identify road signs and verbally name and explain them. There are ten signs in total you must identify. In order to pass, you’ll need to identify at least eight out of the ten signs correctly. If successful, you’ll be able to move on the second part of the knowledge exam. If you identify fewer than eight signs, you’ll need to wait a full fifteen days before taking the test again. Studying the material and practicing beforehand is the best way of preparing yourself for the real thing.

The first thing to recognize is that the road signs you’ll need to identify are mostly common knowledge. By now you’ve probably come to recognize stop signs, speed limit signs, and several others accurately. It’s important to understand the full range of road signs and their meanings while driving. For reference, the Virginia driver’s manual contains illustrations and explanations for every one of the signs on your test. A quick review of this material can help to ensure you retain the correct information about each one. Our pretests for the knowledge exam also cover the sign portation, giving you a chance to practice your knowledge beforehand. Once you can pass our practice test, you’ll be better prepared to take on the knowledge exam and pass on your first try. From there you’ll be able to apply for a learner’s permit and be a step closer to obtaining your permanent license.
