Road Awareness

Road awareness is crucial to both the drivers and the pedestrians. One cannot stress enough on the importance of staying alert and ‘road aware’ while out on the road. For drivers, this involves paying attention to not just their own driving but also to that of the others. Pedestrians must make sure that they look around carefully before crossing roads and must also always be prepared to make a run for it when there is possibility of being hit by an approaching vehicle. Several ‘road awareness’ tips that are absolutely essential for safety when on the roads are given below.

For Pedestrians:

Always look to both sides when crossing a road making sure there are no vehicles approaching. Walk only on the zebra crossing when the lights are red. However, always be prepared in case the lights turn green and traffic is allowed to pass through.

Watch out for vehicles slipping off the road in winter. Also, heavy winter clothing such as hats, scarves etc. can muffle sounds of vehicles approaching and pose danger.

When there is no sidewalk, walk to the side of the road such that you face the traffic and can see vehicles approaching.

Avoid using cell phones, eating, drinking on busy roads as they are a major source of distraction and take one’s focus off roads. Also hold on to kids tightly so that they do not stray onto the road posing a danger to themselves as well as the drivers.

For Drivers:

Always remember that speed kills. According to popular statistics, around 90% people die when hit by a vehicle speeding at 40kmph while only 5% die at 20kmph. Hence, it’s always safer to start early and drive slowly rather than to rush on the roads.

Avoid distractions such as cell-phones, eating, drinking and multi-tasking while driving. It’s important to maintain absolute focus on the road while driving. Also keep kids in the backseat for safety and install a child-lock system in cars.

Alcohol, drugs and other intoxicating substances must be strictly avoided. DUI is not only extremely dangerous but is also heavily punishable by law through heavy fines and sometimes extended to prison sentences.

Be careful around large vehicles such as big trucks and buses. Always avoid having to make them swerve suddenly as these vehicles are restricted in mobility. Also never stick around the sides of these vehicles as they turn out to be blind spots and remember that they generally need twice as much time and space to swerve or stop.

Take extra time during bad weather or traffic. It’s best to avoid the roads during hailstorms, snowstorms and violent rains as they make roads slippery. Do not forget to use snow chains on tires when the roads are snowy and make sure you go at a slow steady space.
