Multiple-Choice Test Taking Strategies

  1. Read the directions
  2. Cover the answers
  3. Read the question and highlight keywords
  4. Try to come up with the correct answer on your own before you look at the ones that are on the exam
  5. Take a look at the answers to see if there is one there that resembles the answer you gave
  6. Do the easy questions first
  7. Use hints from the ones you know to help you with the ones you don’t
  8. Cross out the answers you know are incorrect. Process of elimination.
  9. Highlight keywords from the answers that remain
  10. Give the remaining options a True/False test and choose the one that is most true
  11. Take note of questions that have an all or nothing approach. “Every”…”Always,” are usually not true. “Some”…”few,” are more often true.
  12. Guess as a last resort. Don’t leave any answer blank.
  13. Review the questions to see if you read and understood them correctly
  14. Only change your answer if:
  • You are absolutely certain
  • You misread the question or the answer
  • You obtained a hint from another question
